Windy City Watch
The Young Sea set course for big things.
I typically find girls (including myself) tend to like climatic music. Give me a good crescendo and layers of lush music; and I'll swoon all the way home. Being a fan of shoegazer influenced pop music that usually hails from U.K., such as Travis, Doves and even Coldplay (not always Coldplay, though. Sometimes Chris Martin's voice makes me want to punch him in the face. Stop whining already you big fair trade baby!), it was a very nice surprise when I happened upon a band drawing influence from these Brit bands right here in our very own sweet home Chicago.
I never would have known the band was even from our fair city if it wasn't for their hometown info on their Myspace. The boys in the band have a pretty minimalistic approach to their page. You'll find a snippet about the band from a press clipping, but no bio to be seen. The only way you'll receive some insight into the band and their music is by heading over to their CD Baby page to purchase their album. There, you can read their own personal statements on their music (just so you know, they make music that might mean nothing to you, but means the world to them, they're just nice enough to share it with everyone else. Thanks boys!). But who doesn't like a little mystery and ambiguity in their new favorite bands, right? The Young Sea released their debut self-titled EP earlier this year, containing 6 tracks of shimmering pop songs that blend together full-bodied music and tight harmonies. The lyrics are somewhat macabre, but the music itself tends to have an optimistic tone. Finding the band around this time of year is the best part. The Young Sea's music provide a perfect soundtrack for the fall, because I'm a firm believer that the best sound to accompany sweater weather is dreamy mellow pop music that you can listen to as you walk the cold streets of Chicago.
Catch them live in Chicago at the Double Door on October 26th doing a Halloween show with Shock Stars and American Taxi. The show is 21+. Make sure to wear a sweater (scarf optional) and get ready to have The Young Sea's melodies playing through your head on your crisp walk back home after the show. I know a few songs sure will be on my iPod, and I'll most definitely be rocking my coziest argyle, scarf and all.
