The Pipettes, The Black Lips and His Name is Alive join this week's listening pleasure party.
The Black Lips – O Katrina! [MP3] - The Black Lips play Rock 'n' Roll the way it was always meant to be played – loud, fast, energetic and bluesy. The slightly gritty production accentuates the band's throwback style, while distorted guitars and drums drive the 2 minute 49 second, Sonics-esque romp. While the lyrics are about the hurricane of the same name, they are written and sung in a way to dupe the causal listener into thinking it might actually be about a woman: "O Katrina why you gotta be mean/ you broke my heart way down in New Orleans." Never before has a band made a national tragedy so much fun!

His Name Is Alive – Go To Hell Mountain [MP3] - Michigan-based His Name Is Alive crafts delicate, beautiful songs with a variety of instruments and collaborators. "Go To Hell Mountain" is a gentle, lighthearted song with fuzzed-out guitar, bass and a simple 1-2 drumbeat. Vocalist Andrea Francesca Morici sings with a beautiful voice and the result is somewhere between Feist's "Mushaboom" and Broken Social Scene's "Anthems For a Seventeen Year Old Girl." Lines like "don't want to take you far away/don't want to take up time away from you" match up with the almost-nostalgic vibe of the track, making the song perfect for a reminiscing during a late-summer evening. Too bad it's October.

The Pipettes – Pull Shapes [MP3] - This UK indie pop girl-group revival band blends all the things you love about 50's/60's pop music with crisp Phil Spector-style production (minus the whole murder thing) and a modern lyrical zest. Guitar, violin, xylophone, trumpets, drums and hand claps all drive the catchy, but timelessly familiar chord progression into a song that can make even the most jaded hipster un-ironically smile with glee. The Pipettes ask, "What do you do when the music stops?" several times over the course of the track – to which I can only answer, "Press play and put it on repeat."
