The 25th Frame
What makes a cult film, well, cult(ish)?
I know, I know; it's been awhile. It's been a very long while, sine I last wrote. Fun facts: I graduated college and quickly became homeless for a time. Needless to say, my attentions have been on finding a place in the great city of Chicago to stay.
Now that I have done so, I return to you lovely and amazing readers of HEAVE...

News for Now
Fleet Foxes promise new music "soon," Kanye prepares to storm the SNL stage, and Bob Dylan gets reimagined by some crazy talented people.
Since I find the idea of choking down a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte disgusting, I rely on music and crunchy leaves to transition me into the best season ever. So, I've taken to listening to Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver CONSTANTLY. If I can't have a new FF album to listen to, the next best thing is knowing that it's coming at some point in the future. According to frontman Robin Pecknold (who's been working his little solo butt off), they've finished recording their newest LP, and are in the process of mastering and mixing it. I'll give you every single update I can about this album as the info hits the interwebs.
AW SHIT. Kanye West is hitting up Saturday Night Live. Actually, it probably isn't an "aw shit" moment. I mean, since Taylor Swift's hilariously awful "Kanye performance" at the VMAs, it's safe to say that he now looks like the good guy. Anyway, he'll be dropping by the SNL stage on October 2. Hopefully with some of the awesome people he's been collaborating with lately.
I went through a HUGE Bob Dylan phase last summer. I was that bitch that tried to talk about the genius of Blonde on Blonde as if no one had ever heard it before me. Thankfully, I'm over that point in my life, but I'm still pretty pleased to report that his album Bringing It All Back Home is getting the cover treatment. It's called Subterranean Home Sick Blues: A Tribute to Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home. Doesn't roll off the tongue, but covers by Mirah, Franz Nicolay, Asobi Seksu, and The Morning Benders should take the edge off.

David Byrne talks bicycles, and I learn that it's always "Gucci Time." Especially when contemplating the current state of the film industry.
I've recently become a bike commuter, and I like to be really agressive about it. I've got a neon helmet, lights everyone on my little Schwinn, and even though I get lost every couple of days, I enjoy pretending that I've gained LOADS of street cred by not having a car. I also look for more bike-related paraphenelia, and an audiobook version of David Byrne's Bicycle Diaries might be a worthy investment. The memoir was released last year, but the e-book and audiobook are set for a September 28 release. Check it: the audiobook features music and background noises. Finally! I can feel like I'm riding my bike even when I'm not.
I love when everything feels like it's released at once. For future reference, "everything" qualifies as David Bryne audiobooks and Gucci Mane albums. That's right--even though he's already dropped four mixtapes, he's releasing a brand new album on September 28. Title? The Appeal: Georgia's Most Wanted. Given how much people are flipping out over the newly released single "It's Gucci Time," it's safe to say that this shit is hotly anticipated.
Do movies even matter anymore? This isn't my lame attempt at provocation, but rather a real question. I'm just looking forward to Oscar bait season, because nothing's getting me excited these days. Theatrically, that is. The hundreth incarnation of the Resident Evil series (Resident Evil: Afterlife) made $26.6 million this past weekend, and Takers came in a close second with...oh, God. $5.6 million. So, not a close second at all. I hope these terrible box office numbers don't give Matt Weiner the idea to make a Mad Men movie or anything like that.

Matador releases the biggest box set ever (suck it, Springsteen!), The xx win big, and M.I.A. hits the (domestic and international) road
Whoa. So, as you all probably know by now, Matador Records is turning 21 next month. To remember this fine occasion, they're releasing a huge-ass 6-CD box set called--appropriately--Matador at 21. What's on these six discs, you might ask? Five of 'em include remastered tracks from throughout the label's history, and one is a collection of live recordings from their 1999 10th anniversary show. Oh, and like with any good box set, you get an 85-page book. And 36 Matador poker chips, since they're having that big blow-out show in Vegas. These kids know how to celebrate themselves.
Congratulations to The xx! They have won the coveted Mercury Prize (meaning they had the best British album of the last year, according to a panel of industry bigwigs). I'm just impressed that they beat Foals and Wild Beasts. Here's hoping that they've got plenty more prize-worthy work up their non-Yankee sleeves.
Oh, M.I.A. You truly seem to have fallen from grace. Just because her album is getting a resounding "meh" from most people, and because she keeps running her mouth about silly things. However, if she's going to go out, the girl is going to go out fighting. On tour! She's hitting up eight U.S. locales (that's it?) before heading to England, Germany, and a crapload of countries that aren't the USA.
