News for Now

The article in which I re-discover that I (not-so-secretly) love synth-pop covers, anything and everything that has to do with Sleigh Bells, and cat movies.

How cool is this? Doug Martsch and Brett Nelson of Built to Spill decided to cover seven of their songs in a synth-pop style. Actually, now that I think about it, that might piss off a bunch of legit Built to Spill fans. But for fairweather ones like me, I'm all "hey! I love dance-y tunes! Let's see how this is gonna shake out!" It shakes out just like this: The Electronic Anthology Project features seven Built to Spill tracks (which are all anagrams of their original tracks), and is available at CD Baby, and at the merch table on their current tour.

Remember a couple days ago when I talked about a really exciting tour in the form of LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip? Things just got more exciting. Sleigh Bells is going to open the OTHER leg of the LCD tour! LCD/Sleigh Bells dates run from 9/24 to 10/08, and Hot Chip/LCD dates run from 10/13 to 11/15. Oh, and both Sleigh Bells and Hot Chip will be at the October 15 performance at the Hollywood Bowl. SO HOTT.

Well, the weekend box office results don't hold too many shockers. I mean, sure, it's weird that a movie like Dinner for Schmucks beat out Salt by a few thousand dollars, but still. Inception topped everything, and Charlie St. Cloud performed admirably for being a Lifetime movie (coming in fifth place with $12.3 million). I do find myself a little saddened by the sixth place debut of Cats vs. Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. No, it's not like it's some thrilling commentary on the aftermath of the Gulf oil spill, but it's got adorable puns! Plus cats! Alright, I'm going to go dress up my animals now and get back to y'all when I've salvaged some dignity.
