Nice To Meet You: Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Not anything new, but Preservation Hall Jazz Band is worth a listen
Now for those of you in the “know,” you may be asking, “Andrew, why are you telling us we should take a listen to a band that’s been around since the 60’s?” Well I’ll tell you – it’s because they’re still relevant, still masters of their craft, and still making good music; not to mention they’re the unrivaled sound of New Orleans Jazz.
The Preservation Jazz Hall is a New Orleans landmark, and has been that way since the early 60’s when it was converted from a saloon that was over 100 years old into a jazz venue to house some of the cities greatest jazz artists, and provide a place to play for many of the nations great jazz touring acts. Since its opening, the Preservation Hall’s house band has been performing almost nightly either in the hall or touring around the world. Being that the group is half a century old, there have been numerous lineup changes since it’s forming.
You may still be wonder why this is relevant to a predominantly indie-rock website, and I don’t blame you. The band has recently released a benefit cd, titled, Preservation: An Album to Benefit Preservation Hall & The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program, which not only features some of the band’s historic hits, but also several numbers that include appearances by well known artists like Jim James, Tom Waits, and Andrew Bird. The band also recently finished up a tour with My Morning Jacket and is touring this summer at Jazz festivals across the nation.
