Nice to Meet You: Great Lakes Myth Society
Melodic mystics of the Midwest from Great Lakes Myth Society.
For some reason I seem to be all hung up on some Midwestern folk lately; therefore, carrying with this theme, this week I took a listen to the native Michiganites, Great Lakes Myth Society. The group, which was formed in early 2004, features brothers Timothy and James Monger, Greg McIntosh, Fido Kennington, and Scott McClintock. The band was formed from the remains of the Original Brothers and Sisters of Love, a group which was poised for modest success until the collapse of their former record label The Telegraph Company, and the departure of member Elisabeth Auchinvole. Instead of throwing in the towel after two brutal blows, the remaining members decided to reinvent themselves as Great Lakes Myth Society, a choice that appears to be a step in the right direction.
With a wild guitar that can go from a funkadelic fury to an Americana drenched blues line on a whim, Great lakes Myth Society incorporates piano, accordion, and strings into the standard guitar/bass/drum lineup. Their songs tell stories of where they’re from, the great northern lands and the folk-stories and myths that make it seem all the more spectacular. The band describes themselves as northern rock and take great pride in where they come from.
The band released a self-titled album in 2005 and signed to Quack!Media in 2006 to release their sophomore album, Compass Rose Bouquet. As of late 2008, the band has been hard at work on their third full-length album which is, as of yet, untitled. Be sure to check out a few songs from the Great Lake Myth Society below.
