The Week That Was

Disney finally recognizes that non-white races exist and that they don't always have to be the villain. Sometimes they can be the romantic hero. Because frogs get me all hot in the biscuit.

Friday: After a six-day hospital stay, Rivers Cuomo has been discharged and is on his way home to L.A. Slightly speedy recovery = a Christmas miracle!

My “WTF?” file is getting pretty big, but this newsbyte will just have to fight its way in—Santigold and Lupe Fiasco are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. With their trusty sidekick, Jessica Biel. Oh wait, now I remember that this is to raise awareness for the water crisis in the world. It’s called Summit on the Summit. Clever, no? What I cattily find interesting though is that when this was first announced in April, J. Timberlake was supposed to climb the Mt. as well. Now he’s out, and ex-girlfriend Biel is in? What a crappy trade-off.

Saturday: Nostalgic holiday link time! If you don’t think this is the best and most heartwarming commercial ever, especially of the McDonald’s variety, check to see if you have a heart. OK, it’s not holiday-oriented. But, it was on while my family was taping the Garfield Christmas special back in the late ‘80s, so I grew up thinking that it was the epitome of festive commercials. Apparently, I also grew up with no concept of what “festive” meant.

Oh, and one holiday-related gripe. Because this is my column and I’ll cry if I want to. WHY DOES URBAN OUTFITTERS KEEP CO-OPTING MY CHILDHOOD? First, they did their whole Where the Wild Things Are tie-in. Fine. But now they’re selling a “Linus blanket” for $25! Blasphemy.

Sunday: Did you hear? Disney finally recognized that more races exist than just white people and Pocahontas! The Princess and the Frog, which also marked the studio’s first hand-drawn animated film in forever, made $25 million.

Monday: I loved Titus Andronicus’ debut, so I’m naturally enthralled over news of their second album, which has a decidedly more conceptual bent. It’s called The Monitor, and you can expect it on March 9. Oh, and it’s not just any concept album. It’s one influenced by the Civil War. Other details—song lengths are long, with one clocking in at 14 minutes, and there are loads of great guest musicians like Craig Finn, and members of Vivian Girls and Ponytail. Oh, and these guests perform “spoken-word interludes” as Civil War-era figures! My stars and garters, this is gonna be something great.

In decidedly less exciting news, Courtney Love has lost guardianship of her 17-year-old daughter Frances Bean Cobain. She is now in the care of Kurt Cobain’s mother and his sister. Not many details are available, but it’s hard to imagine how additional details could spin this story in a positive way. Best of luck to both women.

Tuesday: Go Karen O! The YYYs frontwoman has been nominated for both a Golden Globe for the Where the Wild Things Are score and a Grammy for the song “All is Love,” also from the movie.

Golden Globe nominations are out, and I’m pleased about a few—(500) Days of Summer best picture (comedy or musical) nomination in addition to Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s best actor nomination, and The Hurt Locker’s recognition for best screenplay, director, and picture (drama). But Julie & Julia for best picture (comedy or musical)? REALLY?

Wednesday: Oh nos! Amazon leaked Lil’ Wayne’s Rebirth by accidentally shipping 500 copies to customers that had pre-ordered the album. Way to go, you warehouse superstars!

If you find yourself in Wisconsin, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, or Kansas in the last week of January, try to see Yo La Tengo and Times New Viking. They’ll be touring together at that time, if you didn’t put two and two together by now.

Please, just watch this around the 1:41 mark.

Thursday: Well, well, well. What do we have here? Indie musicians littering the pages of Vogue? If there’s anything that rag loves more than skinny bitches, it’s boys that could pass for skinny bitches if you’re just feeling around in the dark. Grab the January issue to see the likes of Beirut, MGMT, The Horrors, Golden Silvers, and more!
