News for Now

Labor Day weekend is basically the definition of a slow news weekend. But here we go!

File this under "Reasons I HATE Morrissey." We should be up to entry #384 by now. So, he was chatting up The Guardian this past week, and called the Chinese a "subspecies." Why? Because he's disgusted by their cat and dog trade and lack of animal protection laws. As someone who loves animals and is a vegetarian, I'm also upset about their intensely poor treatment of animals. But to say they're a "subspecies"? Shut the fuck up, Moz. Let's not go generalizing and insulting an entire race now, OK? Be sure to read about his complex feelings toward animals and people in his upcoming autobiography, which is "almost concluded" according to this interview.

Unfortunate news for ELO fans. Former cellist Mike Edwards (who played with the band from 1972-1975) died on Friday at the age of 62. He was driving his van in England when he collided with a 1300-pound bale of hay that had gotten onto the road.

And that's about all we've got for the weekend. Time for some shameless self-promotion! If you're reading this article right now, thank you so much. Honestly, it warms my little pop culture heart to think of people actually reading my writing every so often. I couldn't be more proud to be involved with HEAVE and to be associated with the incredible writers that contribute their time and talent to this site. Obviously, if you're visiting HEAVE, you're a fan of us and of music. Why not combine those two loves and come to our third(!) anniversary show/party at the Empty Bottle on September 17? Owen, Savoir Adore, and the Streets on Fire will be there, so you're guaranteed a great show. Check out HEAVEmedia's fan page on Facebook for more details. I'm torn up that I won't be able to make an appearance (given my Portland address), but don't worry--I'll send along some signed nude photos.
